Metadata is information about a file: who made it, what it shows, what size it is, who may use it. Assets searches on metadata, so well-described files are found faster.
Where you see metadata
- The search box. Finds files that contain your term anywhere in their metadata.
- The thumbnails. Show basic information such as the file name and rating.
- The Metadata panel. Select a file to see all its metadata. Open or close the panel with Alt+M. This is where you edit it.
Where it comes from
When you upload a file, Assets reads the information that is already inside it, such as camera data and dimensions. Assets supports the common standards for this (IPTC, EXIF, XMP). Some fields can never be changed, like the date a file was created. Others you can edit freely, like the description.
What to add yourself
- A description of what can be seen in the image or video.
- Copyright information, including who owns the file and how to contact them.
- Tags that describe the content. A photo of a red apple in a studio might get: apple, fruit, red, food, studio shot.
- A rating to mark favorites. Press 1 to 5 to set a rating, 0 to remove it and 9 to reject the file.
The more you add, the more likely the file will be found.
Choosing which fields you see
Assets has more than 400 metadata fields. You do not need most of them. Click the Configure Metadata icon in the top right corner of the Metadata panel, the Filter or the search results, select the fields you want, and click Apply.
