Getting your files into Assets is the first step. There are several ways to do it, depending on where the files should end up.
The upload methods
- Drag files from your computer onto a folder or Collection in the Folder browser.
- Drag files onto the content panel of the folder you have opened.
- Open an empty folder, click Click here, and browse to your files.
- Click the Upload files button in the top right corner (shortcut: U) and browse to your files.
- Upload files in the Linked panel to link them to an existing file straight away.
- Ask an external contributor to upload files with a Share Request. See the next article.
After you add the files, a page shows all of them so you can check the upload and add metadata. The upload continues in the background.
Where the files end up
The location is shown at the top of the upload page. When you drop files on a folder at the highest level of the structure, Assets places them in a subfolder named Auto organized, which is divided into year and date folders. Pick a more specific folder if you want to control the location.
Add metadata while you are at it
Files are found through their metadata. Part of it is read from the file itself, but it pays off to add a description, tags, a status and copyright information right after uploading.
Replacing a file that was uploaded earlier
If you uploaded a temporary version, for example a low resolution image, you can replace it later with the final version. Read the article on replacing files.
Good to know
Your administrator can send the Upload button to a custom upload tool, for example to require certain metadata. If that is the case on your trial, some of the methods above may be unavailable.
