Assets for InDesign is a plug-in that connects Adobe InDesign to Assets. Designers use it to place images from Assets on a layout, and to store the layouts themselves in Assets.
What you need
- A Standard or Pro license.
- The plug-in, installed in InDesign. Download the installer from the Install clients page in the Avatar menu in Assets.
- A login to Assets from InDesign, using the WoodWing Assets menu that the plug-in adds.
Placing files on a layout
- Optional: in InDesign, select the frame where the file should go.
- In Assets, search for the files.
- Select them and drag them into InDesign.
The placed file stays linked to the original in Assets. When the file is updated in Assets, you can update it in your layout too.
Opening a layout from Assets
- Right-click the layout in Assets.
- Choose Open in InDesign.
The layout is checked out, so nobody else can edit it while you work. When you save and close the layout in InDesign, it is checked in again.
If InDesign opens but the layout does not load on a Mac, open the system settings for Privacy and Security, go to Automation, and make sure that the Assets InDesign item is allowed to control Finder and Adobe InDesign.
Keeping links healthy
- Choose WoodWing Assets, then Relink File or Relink All Files to restore links, for example when you opened a layout before logging in.
- Assets for InDesign can also relink local images to Assets automatically when you open a layout. You control this in the InDesign preferences under WoodWing Assets.
- The Links panel can show extra columns such as the Assets ID and Assets path. Choose Panel Options to turn them on.
- Newer versions of placed files are downloaded to a folder called Elvis Checkouts on your computer.
- When you replace a placed file that is used several times, the plug-in offers to update all of its occurrences.
