Editing metadata is a quick way to make your files easier to find.
Editing a file’s metadata
- Select a file.
- Open the Metadata panel if it is not already visible (Alt+M).
- Change the fields you need, such as the description, tags or status.
You need the permission to edit metadata. If a field is greyed out, either you do not have that permission or the field is read-only, like the creation date.
Working with several files
When you select more than one file, the Metadata panel shows the metadata of the selected files. Take the time to try this on a few test files first, so you see how fields with different values behave before you apply a change to a larger group.
Predefined term lists (taxonomies)
Some fields only accept values from a list your organization has set up. This keeps spelling and naming consistent. Click the field, choose one or more values, and click the Back button at the top of the panel when you are done.
Links in metadata
URLs in multi-line fields such as the description, and in multi-value fields such as tags, are shown as clickable links below the field.
Copies and sensitive fields
When a file is copied, some fields, such as copyright information, can be set up so that they can be edited only on the original. If you cannot edit a field on a copy, this is probably why.
