Sometimes a file is uploaded early, such as a low resolution image, and the final version arrives later, perhaps in a higher resolution or as a different file type. Instead of deleting and re-uploading, replace the file.
Why replace instead of delete and upload
- You do not have to delete anything or start over, and the work you did around the file stays in one place.
- The file name in Assets is retained.
- The previous file stays available in the History panel, so you can go back to it.
How to replace
- Select the file in Assets.
- Right-click it and choose Replace, or press R.
- Browse to the new file on your computer and open it.
- If you are asked what to do with the metadata, choose one of these:
- Replace metadata: the metadata of the original is overwritten by the metadata of the new file.
- Keep original metadata: the metadata you already entered is kept.
Information that describes the file itself, such as its size, is always updated. Choosing whether to keep or replace metadata requires Assets 6.107 or higher.
Replace or check in?
If you opened a file for editing, saved it under the same name and want to put it back, use check in. If you want to put back a different file, or one with a different name or type, use Replace. The article on check-out and check-in explains the difference in detail.
